The Summary Care Record is meant to help emergency doctors and nurses when you contact them when surgery is closed. Initially it will contain just your medications and allergies. As the central NHS computer system develops, other staff who work in the NHS will be able to access it along with information from hospitals, out of hours services and specialist letters will be added.
As with all new systems there are pros and cons. When you speak to an emergency doctor you might overlook something that is important. If you are medically unfit to speak and an emergency doctor has access to your records it might avoid mistakes or problems.
On the other hand, you may have strong views about sharing your personal information and wish to keep this at the level of this Practice. New patients who register with us can opt out of the scheme by completing a form and handing it in with the other registration documents.
For existing patients it is assumed that you want your record to be shared unless you actively opt out.
